Benton County is located in north central Indiana, situated half-way between Indianapolis and Chicago on the Illinois State Line. Our County is over 90 percent agriculture and is one of Indiana’s top agriculture communities thanks to our rich, high-yielding soil. We may be known for our wide open spaces, rich farm ground and traditional farming, however in 2008 we welcomed the future and became known as the "Home of Indiana's FIRST wind farm."

The Bicentennial Committee will be meeting Tuesday December 8th at 5:00pm at the Annex building in Fowler. If you would like to be a part of the Indiana Bicentennial or would like to learn more about what Benton County is doing to celebrate then plan to attend the meeting! If you would like to be involved but can not attend the meeting, call Lauren Lee at 765-583-2107.
2016 is the State of Indiana's Bicentennial! As part of the celebration, the state is asking each county to participate in different events, to highlight our past, present and future. One event is the Torch Relay. The relay was created to honor Hoosiers who have served their community, region or state through public service, achievements, acts of heroism or volunteer service. The Bicentennial Committee is seeking Torch Bearer nominations. Do you know someone in our Benton County Community that deserves to carry the state's torch during the relay? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Details available online (indiana2016.org) or call the Otterbein Public Library (583-2107). Nominations must be submitted to Lauren at the library by December 31st. The 92-county torch relay will pass through Benton County on October 11, 2016. To download a form, click here.
The Benton County Extension office will be holding a Be Heart Smart program in December. The class will meet four times in December, the 1st,3rd,8th and 10th, from 12-1 pm. Are you the parent of a child(ren) aged birth-5? The Benton County Extension Office is starting a Raising Sprouts group. Connect with other parents, and learn and share about raising healthy, active children. First meeting is January 27, 2016.
The 2nd Annual Run Run Rudolph 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday December 5th at 8:30 a.m. (EST). As a special bonus all participants will receive a certificate for $5 in Jingle Bucks, spendable on race day at participating Fowler merchants and vendors including Sacred Heart Bazaar. To be guaranteed a t-shirt (long sleeved) register by Monday November 23rd. Race day registration and check in will be from 7:45-8:15 a.m. at the Fowler Community Center. All proceeds will benefit the Fowler Community Center and the Benton Central Student Council. Find a registration form here.
Letters 2 Santa are back! If you would like to nominate a local organization, write a Letter 2 Santa by Noon December 3rd. Letters can be mailed to the Benton Community Foundation or dropped off at their office. Santa's elves will collet the letters and help him decide which organizations should receive a $500 award. Awards will be announced on the Community Foundation's website (www.bentoncf.org) and their Facebook page each day December 14th-18th. Click on the image below for more information!

The Purdue Extension Office in Benton County is now a distributing agency for the Indiana Safe Sleep Program. The program provides safe sleep education and cribs to families in need of a crib for their baby. There is no income criteria, however they must currently have no safe place for their baby to sleep and no other resources to acquire a safe place for them to sleep. Anyone in need can contact Kelsie Muller at the BC Extension office, 884-0140.
The Benton Fountain Warren Adult Education program offers a GED prep class in Oxford on Tues./Thurs. 4-7pm in the CAP offices. Contact the Learning Center at 765-764-1880 or "like" them on Facebook for more information about any of the classes they offer. They offer welding certification classes, C.N.A. classes in Williamsport, HVAC Maintenance Course, CDL Courses.
A CNA class in Williamsport will begin January 4, 2016. This is a three week class, and you may be able to take the class at no cost to you! Call soon to start the process, 765-764-1880.
